From just one plant you can get as many as you want! Here’s what you need to do.
Do you only have one geranium plant on your balcony, but would you like to fill it with flowers? You can also do it at no cost , just propagate the plant you already have by following these simple steps.
Here is how to propagate geranium with the cutting method .
- Thoroughly disinfect any scissors or shears you will use to prune the cuttings
- Cut the branch, leaving two centimeters of soil.
- Prepare jars, or glasses, with universal soil and a tablespoon of activated charcoal.
- Dip the cutting in rooting powder, if you don’t have any at home you can always use cinnamon.
- Place the geranium cuttings in potting soil and cover them with a plastic bag to create a greenhouse effect.
- Water well.
- After 20 days you will see the roots appear.
Geraniums are among the most popular and sought-after plants. If they are well cared for, they give us beautiful, very colorful flowers. You will surely have seen balconies full of flowering geraniums, so you may be wondering why your geranium plant doesn’t flower in the same way.
One of the most common reasons why geraniums stop flowering is exposure to very cold temperatures, frost or wind. Geraniums should be protected by placing them indoors during colder days. But that’s not the only trigger for your geraniums not flowering – we list some tips below.
Put them in a lighted area
These beautiful plants cannot bloom if they do not have the right amount of natural light, i.e. sunlight. Artificial light in the house is not intense enough to stimulate the growth of geraniums. But be careful: do not place the geraniums in full sun if they are in a shady environment, it could undergo drastic changes and die.
That said, it’s important to know that geraniums can also bloom in partial shade (not full shade), so don’t be discouraged if you live in an apartment that doesn’t get enough exposure to sunlight.
Give the plant the right space to grow
When we buy a geranium plant and bring it home, we must assume that it has been in the same pot for a very long time. It is precisely for this reason that the plant must be transplanted into a larger pot, to give the roots the right space and the possibility of obtaining nutrients from a greater amount of soil.
As plants grow, they need to be transplanted into larger pots, otherwise the plant will not flower or even die.
Fertilize your geraniums
If your geraniums are planted in pots, it is recommended to fertilize them in spring and summer. Once they have reached their maximum size (geraniums are relatively small plants), it will no longer be necessary to transplant them and it is precisely for this reason that they need fertilization which can be:
- organic fertilizer : you can choose any compost, humus, guano, manure, eggshells or banana. A handful is enough for each plant;
- chemical fertilizers : to make your geraniums bloom you can opt for fertilizers produced specifically for this type of plant.
Water only when absolutely necessary
This may seem like generic advice, but giving the geranium plant the right amount of water is essential for it to bloom. Controlling the frequency of watering is not easy: many factors must be taken into account, such as the climate of the region in which you live, the type of soil or even the size of the pot.
Geraniums don’t like completely dry soil, but at the same time, soil that’s too wet could permanently damage them. The topsoil layer dries quickly, while the one closest to the roots stays moist longer.
For this reason, it is important to check the humidity of the soil and this can be done by inserting a wooden stake into it.
Preventing the arrival of the geranium butterfly
The geranium butterfly is an insect that causes a lot of damage to our favorite plants. In the larval stage, it bores through the stems and eats the insides, blocking the plant’s growth and flowering.
There are targeted products to prevent and combat the geranium moth. Ask your trusted nursery.
Prune geraniums
A great tip for maintaining the health of geraniums is to prune them in late winter to encourage the growth of more stems and, therefore, more flowers. This pruning does not need to be drastic: just reduce the length of the stems by a few centimeters. Remember to use a clean, sharp knife or scissors.
